Do I need to feel hungry all the time to lose weight?
Before we answer that question let’s give you a little insight into the basic science which suggests, if you consume less than you burn, you will lose weight. It is pretty much that simple.
The reason why a low carb diet works is that by removing one vital food group you ultimately eat less calories. The reason why intermittent fasting works is you generally don’t consume as many calories in a shorter window of opportunity. The reason why turning food into colours or points works is that it ensures you eat fewer total calories than you need. The problem, as we are all aware with any “Diet”, is as soon as you come off it you will usually gain the weight back as very few are sustainable, or even good for you.
So, what is the answer? Well, we are all quite different right? and it takes a more bespoke approach to really see a long-term change. Yes, you need to eat less than you need but what is that number and how do you best approach it, and what are your current lifestyle demands that need to be considered, possibly first.
An argument could be made that eating 6 small meals per day will keep you feeling full all day and you would never have to feel hungry but, that does not work for everyone. We could suggest you don’t eat after 8pm but again if you work shifts that might not work for you. We could suggest you eat all your calories between 6pm and 9pm but that might not work for you either.
The main thing is you know what number of calories you need, and you have a full understanding over time what it takes to get you there. As importantly though, if you lead a busy lifestyle, when can you take 10 -15 minutes to fit in a small meal?
At CONCEPT fitness we take the approach that generally your own intake probably just needs a little tweaking to find what is optimal for you and your lifestyle. So tracking your intake over a period of weeks and making slight changes here and there is the answer.
It’s all about learning to FISH and not settling for some GURU handing you a fish each day and telling you it’s the only fish that gives you what you need. Learn how to catch your own fish and you will learn not only how many you need, but probably catch a larger variety that will actually give you an improved array of the right amount of nutrients you need, when you need them.
So, no you don’t have to feel hungry all the time when trying to lose weight, you just need to find out what best works for you and it starts with understanding your numbers.
